About the Process of Layered Glass Painting

To create my dimensional paintings, I paint with traditional oil paints directly onto layers of glass, which are stacked (1/4" or more apart) in a shadow-box frame.  Most of the artworks are actually created on plexiglass (for lightness and stability), though they are covered with a layer of glass (for ease of cleaning and resistance to scratching).

The image in the animation is of a painting called Passiflora.  The piece is created with 3 separate layers, stacked about 1/2" apart.   The top layer includes the figure, flowers and grass painted directly on plexiglass (the white areas are actually clear). The second layer includes a painted filigree gate and a primitive goddess figure. Below this is a lace curtain, suspended over a light background. When the 3 layers are placed together, they create shadows within the piece, which cannot be duplicated in the flat format of a print or computer screen.
